Four wheel motors, a 360°-scanning 3D LiDAR, two AI-powered cameras, the ability to tackle slopes of up to 80%, and a 40 cm cutting width across two decks. With this outsized specification, the cordless Dreame A3 AWD Pro robot lawn mower has one target in mind: huge, sloping and uneven gardens of up to 5,000 m² that make most other robots give up. Here is our verdict after three months of mowing.
More than three months: that is how long we spent testing the A3 AWD Pro 5000. A robot lawn mower cannot realistically be assessed in a week, especially not a premium model such as Dreame's newest offering. This lengthy testing period also suits the brand's approach to this category.
While Dreame is happy to flood the market with cordless vacuum cleaners and robot vacuums every year, it takes a far more selective approach in the garden. In fact, it goes against brands such as Navimow and Mova, whose ranges gain several new models each spring. Since entering this market in 2024, the company has consistently focused on the premium end with one family each year. After the A1 in 2024 and last year's A2, which had already impressed us, the A3 arrives as Dreame's first 4WD model.
Available in versions rated for 3,500 and 5,000 m², priced at €2,599 and €2,999 respectively, the A3 range sits close to semi-professional machines intended for hotels and landscapers. Put simply, the A3 AWD Pro is among the most ambitious robot lawn mowers currently available to private owners.
Let us be honest: few gardens need such an arsenal. This robot is designed for exceptional plots combining vast areas, changes in elevation, trees, roots and unpredictable ground. Its promise, in short, is to turn a trail-running course into a golf green. This full review examines whether it delivers on that bold claim.
A 24 kg beast installed in under two hours
It is an exceptional machine. Measuring 74 cm long and weighing 23.9 kg, this robot lawn mower belongs in the heavyweight class. Its raised ground clearance, sides protected by thick plastic reinforcement and broad bumper give it the look of a rally car.
Once the initial inspection is over, installation proves fairly quick. Naturally, at this price, there is no antenna cluttering up the lawn. The A3 AWD Pro operates entirely wire-free. After the usual Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections, mapping is ultimately the longest stage.
The boundary-setting process is clever. Initially directed with the virtual joystick, our A3 recognised the lawn edges itself as it travelled and offered to continue plotting the boundary automatically. We let it do so for a relatively rectangular area, and it performed well.
Another advantage is the level of map detail available. Around fifteen types of no-go area are offered, including pools, trampolines and vegetable patches, while linking paths are exceptionally easy to create. Even a convoluted plot like ours, covering roughly 855 m², took only two hours to set up. Clearly, reaching its full 5,000 m² capacity will require more time. Given how straightforward its mapping system is to use, however, a decent Sunday should be enough.
Dreame A3 AWD Pro: a genuine 4WD for almost any terrain
Visually, the A3 AWD Pro's wheels are impossible to overlook, as they are central to its identity. At the rear are large, deeply treaded wheels. Up front sits a far more unusual pair: two omnidirectional wheels made up of a ring of angled rollers. This is a rarity in the sector, helping it move sideways and manoeuvre more easily.
Another change separates this model from the two-wheel-drive A2. This time, the drivetrain is all-wheel drive, meaning that each of the four wheels has its own hub-integrated motor. The A3 AWD Pro can therefore turn on the spot and handle tight corners, despite its substantial dimensions.
This mobility lives up to its promise on every type of ground. Loose soil beside walls and around trees with large roots, both classic traps, never stopped it. Over three months, we did not have to rescue it from an awkward position once. The same applies to uneven terrain: the robot climbs over large decorative pebbles and crosses from grass to patios without stalling. Its generous ground clearance and 5.5 cm obstacle-crossing ability both play a significant part.
There are still a few drawbacks to report. The day after heavy rain, when the soil is waterlogged, the wheels can occasionally slip. Unfortunately, there is no specific traction-control option, such as temporarily limiting drive through the app.
In these conditions, the front rollers leave marks on vulnerable areas. This is primarily a cosmetic issue, but it is worth noting. As for the 80% slopes claimed by Dreame, our site did not include anything that steep. Even so, its dips and bumps never caused the robot any difficulty.
LiDAR guidance and twin cutting discs
During three months of testing, the A3 AWD Pro neither got stuck nor lost its way. This remained true even on the narrow, shaded route joining two of our zones. Three sharp eyes share the work: a 3D LiDAR that scans its surroundings through 360 degrees over a range of 70 metres, plus two AI-controlled cameras.
Known as OmniSense 3.0, this trio creates a three-dimensional representation of the garden and enables the robot to establish its position from its immediate surroundings. It is a sensible choice, since satellite-positioning models can sometimes lose their bearings beneath dense trees or alongside walls. This precise vision is also used for obstacle detection.
We tried every trap we could think of, including a garden hose laid across its route, but none caught it out. It detected and avoided the hose every time. The A3 AWD is equally impressive when it comes to cutting. Beneath its body are two floating discs, each fitted with three blades. Together, they provide a 40 cm cutting width-almost twice that of conventional mid-range robots such as the Navimow i208 LiDAR.
The discs follow ground irregularities to retain a consistent cutting height, adjustable from 3 to 10 cm. The finish is genuinely even, whether tackling fresh, tall grass or smaller post-heatwave tidying sessions over recent weeks. For edges, the EdgeMaster 2.0 system takes over. It moves the discs sideways to cut to within less than 3 cm of boundaries.
The result is excellent-good enough to make a manual edge trimmer almost redundant. For particularly awkward corners, the app even includes a manual mowing mode, turning the A3 into a remote-controlled mower.
It is hard to imagine a more complete app
The qualities that built the manufacturer's reputation with household appliances are evident in the garden too. In its dedicated robot lawn mower version, Dreamehome stands out for both its clarity and its extensive feature set.
Cutting height can be adjusted in 0.5 cm increments, while there are three working speeds, strip-direction settings, criss-cross and chequerboard patterns, individual settings for every zone, seasonal schedules, rain protection, automatic return to the dock whenever the temperature falls below 6 °C, and reduced speed at night. There is even a setting for low branches, instructing the robot to ignore them. It is a welcome feature on the narrow paths linking our different zones, where most robots stop abruptly after mistaking clusters of branches for an impassable obstacle.
Dreame is also generous with connectivity: 4G is included for three years. After that, expect to pay €50 per year to extend this extra. It means you do not have to be at home to remain in control of the robot. You can operate it from anywhere, track its position in real time, and receive an alert if it is lifted or detects someone in the garden.
To receive a live feed from the onboard camera, however, the robot must be connected to Wi-Fi. That is unsurprising, but owners of very large gardens will need to invest in a repeater to monitor the far end of their plot remotely.
Charging time matches its strong battery life
With its 10 Ah battery, the A3 AWD is equipped for long mowing days. The main section of our map, measuring 415 m², was always completed in one run in around two hours. Each time, the robot left its dock fully charged and returned with 50 to 60% battery remaining.
Based on these figures, it should cover between 800 and 900 m² on one charge before returning automatically to its station. We subsequently confirmed this estimate in real-world use. When mowing our entire 855 m² plot, the robot almost always finished everything in a single pass. On two or three occasions, a small 50 to 80 m² section remained. This difference chiefly depends on the mowing settings and how obstacles are handled.
Extrapolated to 5,000 m², it would need close to 24 hours of mowing, plus five to six recharges. That puts the overall total between 34 and 36 hours. The estimate will vary with terrain complexity and the selected speed, but it provides a clear indication of the time needed for XXL gardens.
Finally, maintaining the A3 AWD Pro is reasonably simple. Thanks to its IPX6 rating, its chassis and cutting decks can be rinsed with a hose. A quick brush is then enough to remove accumulated soil from the wheels. The availability of certain spare parts is more concerning, though. At the time of this test, the shop mainly offered blades, a cleaning kit and a €249 garage.
We found neither a battery nor wheels sold separately. On a robot at this price, it seems essential that both should be easy to replace.
Our verdict on the Dreame A3 AWD Pro 5000 robot lawn mower
After more than three months with it, it is difficult not to praise the A3 AWD Pro 5000. Its all-wheel drive prevents it from becoming trapped by roots, dips or demanding slopes, while its LiDAR and two cameras allow it to navigate accurately without ever losing its way. Its 40 cm cutting width produces a neat finish and clean edges. Battery life is just as generous as the long list of settings in its app.
That said, it is not flawless. Its omnidirectional wheels mark waterlogged soil, its 24 kg weight makes the rare occasions when it must be handled more difficult, and spare-part availability remains limited for now. For a machine launched at €2,999, one might also have hoped that the dock shelter would be included. These may be minor gripes, but they are legitimate at this price.
Even so, they do not affect the essential point. This robot was never intended for ordinary gardens. Its audience is large, uneven plots that combine slopes, narrow passages and irregular ground-the kind of garden that makes entry-level and mid-range models look inadequate.
This is where Dreame has its strongest advantage. There is no shortage of models priced between €800 and €2,000, but choices become scarce beyond that. As a result, the A3 AWD Pro's direct rivals can be counted on one hand.
The Mammotion Luba 3 AWD (€3,199) is the closest alternative. Its navigation combines LiDAR and NetRTK, however, making it reliant on good 4G or Wi-Fi coverage. The Navimow X450 (€3,199) also uses satellite positioning and goes further with a 43 cm cutting width.
Finally, the RockMow Z150 (€3,499) stands out with 8 cm obstacle clearance and steerable front wheels, again at the cost of reliance on an RTK signal. As well as being the least expensive of the group, the A3 AWD Pro is the only one to rely on entirely onboard navigation. On the most challenging terrain, that is arguably its real luxury.
