Washing-up Liquid Against Weeds in Paving Joints: Does It Last Longer Than Vinegar?

Anyone who has spent hours kneeling and pulling weeds from paving joints will know the frustrating pattern: as soon as everything looks tidy, fresh green shoots appear again. Many people therefore turn to kitchen cupboard remedies, especially vinegar. Yet its results are often short-lived. Another product, found beside almost every kitchen sink, can prove surprisingly more persistent in the garden.

Why vinegar alone fails against weeds in paving joints

Over recent years, vinegar has become a go-to household trick for dealing with weeds. Its action is quick and obvious at first: foliage wilts, stems discolour and the plant appears dead. Even so, the greenery generally returns within just a few weeks.

This comes down to how it works. The acid mainly attacks the parts above ground. Leaves dry out, cells burst and the visible plant collapses. Beneath the paving, however, very little often happens.

As long as the root system survives, it can keep producing fresh growth. On paths, driveways and between patio slabs, where plants force their way through narrow gaps, this “surface attack” will usually not be enough. Anyone seeking a lasting solution would need to keep spraying repeatedly.

That level of effort leads many gardeners to look for something that boosts the effect, preferably another household product rather than a conventional garden chemical.

Washing-up liquid as a secret weapon: why it is so effective in the garden

This is where a product intended for greasy dishes comes in: washing-up liquid. Rather than working primarily through acid or salt, it relies on surfactants. These are cleaning agents that dissolve fats and alter surface tension.

Plant leaves are covered by a natural protective layer containing wax. This coating makes water bead up and prevents droplets from staying on the surface. That is useful in rainfall, but less helpful when tackling weeds.

Washing-up liquid partly disrupts this protective film. As a result, the liquid clings to the leaves more effectively, spreads more evenly and penetrates the plant tissue more thoroughly.

Used on its own, washing-up liquid can dry out the above-ground parts of a plant. Combined with vinegar, the effect is stronger: the acid damages the cells, while the surfactants ensure that enough of it comes into contact with the weeds in the first place.

A straightforward basic recipe has become common in many gardens and requires no specialist equipment. It is particularly suited to joints in paving, steps, patios and gravel paths.

Basic recipe for gentle weed treatment

For light growth, such as isolated young plants in joints, a mild mixture will usually be enough. Most households already have the necessary ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon washing-up liquid, preferably an eco-friendly product
  • 1 litre water
  • optional: 1 cup vinegar

Mix the ingredients thoroughly, or pour them into a spray bottle and shake briefly. Spray the solution directly and selectively onto the leaves of the unwanted plants. A warm, dry and sunny day is the best time to do this. The plants should not be watered immediately after treatment.

Stronger options for persistent growth

For densely overgrown areas or tougher species, many amateur gardeners move on to more powerful mixtures. Three commonly used strengths are as follows:

The final option is considered “radical” and should be used only on areas where no plants are ever meant to grow, including in future. This is because it also contains salt, which changes the soil over the long term.

Where washing-up liquid is useful – and where it is not

At first glance, washing-up liquid may seem to have no place in a garden. That is broadly true for vegetable beds and lawns. In certain locations, however, it can be effective without affecting the wider surroundings straight away.

“It is best used on purely mineral surfaces: paving, slabs, gravel areas and driveways that are not intended to be planted.”

These include, for example:

  • Patios made from concrete or natural stone slabs
  • Paths laid with paving blocks or brick pavers
  • Gravel areas beside garages or carports
  • Kerb edges around driveways

It should not be used in vegetable beds, perennial borders or on lawns. In those settings, washing-up liquid may alter soil structure, interfere with water absorption and harm soil organisms. Anyone wanting to keep their soil healthy should instead remove weeds mechanically or use ground cover, such as mulch or ground-cover plants.

The risks washing-up liquid and salt pose to soil

Although the mixture may look practical at first, it is not an innocent miracle solution. Many washing-up liquids contain ingredients that are harmless on dishes but can persist longer in soil. Surfactants do break down to some extent, but they may still place pressure on soil bacteria and earthworms.

Adding salt is even more problematic. It builds up below the surface and gradually leaves the soil depleted. Plant roots suffer osmotic stress, water uptake becomes more difficult and the microfauna declines.

For that reason, salty recipes should be used very rarely and only with care. Regularly allowing weeds to grow before applying salt-and-washing-up-liquid mixtures can create a long-term problem beneath the surface.

Alternatives and additions for a well-kept courtyard

Keeping joints and paths under control for the long term does not depend on liquid mixtures alone. Several methods can be combined effectively to reduce the workload:

  • Joint scrapers and brushes: Particularly suitable for small areas; physically demanding, but highly precise.
  • Gas burners or hot-air tools: These scorch or heat plants briefly, causing the leaves to die back. Roots may remain, so repeat treatments can be needed.
  • Pressure washers: These remove loose plants and moss, but can wash jointing material away, so they should be used carefully.
  • Renewing joints with sand or grit: Porous jointing mortar or soil between paving blocks practically invites weeds in. Harder material makes it more difficult for roots to establish themselves.

In practice, a combination often works best: treat stubborn spots selectively with a washing-up-liquid-and-water solution, maintain the rest of the surface mechanically, and repair joints regularly.

Legal and practical guidance on use

One issue that is often overlooked is that many local authorities take a critical view of using weed-control substances on sealed surfaces. Residues can be carried by rainwater into drains or surface waters. This also applies to homemade mixtures made from household products.

Washing-up liquid and vinegar are not intended to enter soil in large quantities, and certainly not surface-water drainage. Anyone who sprays should therefore use the mixture sparingly and precisely, avoid creating puddles, and stay away from heavily used driveways where the next storm could wash everything directly into a drain.

It is also worth looking at the underlying cause. Very wide joints, jointing material containing lots of soil or sand, and permanently damp spots provide ideal places for seeds to germinate. Structural improvements, such as narrower joints, drainage or specialist jointing mortars, mean less follow-up work later on – with or without washing-up liquid.

The gardening trend is clear: many amateur gardeners would rather reach for a kitchen bottle than a chemical container. Used in moderation, washing-up liquid can be a useful tool on stone and gravel surfaces, but it does not replace attention to soil quality, water drainage and a willingness to pick up a joint scraper again from time to time.
