Why Sardine Oil Should Never Go Down the Drain

Anyone who regularly eats tinned fish will know the routine: open the tin, take out the sardines, pour the oil into the sink. The traces disappear down the trap, the plate feels “lighter”, and so does the conscience. Changing your habits for good usually requires only minor everyday adjustments. The following can help:

  • Keep a dedicated “used oil container” beside or beneath the sink for all small leftovers.
  • Have a spoon ready to remove oil from the tin in a controlled way rather than simply tipping it out.
  • Keep recipe ideas close at hand, so the oil does not end up in the bin merely out of convenience.

In time, this new approach to tinned-fish oil can become as automatic as pouring it away once was - but much more useful.

How to judge the quality and freshness of tinned sardine oil

Fish oil can go rancid. If the contents of the tin smell harsh, pungent or noticeably different from usual, take care. A mildly fishy aroma is normal; a rancid or sour note is not.

  • the best-before date and storage instructions;
  • whether the tin is undamaged, with no dents or bulges;
  • the type of oil used, such as olive oil or sunflower oil.
