The scene is a familiar one: the pan comes off the hob, the lid is held at an angle, it is tipped once – and boiling pasta water rushes straight into the drain. Clean, quick, gone. Yet this everyday routine can gradually damage the kitchen, lead to costly pipe issues and deprive pasta dishes of the special touch that professional chefs use as a matter of course.
A heat shock for the kitchen: when pasta water attacks the pipes
Pasta water usually goes from the boiling pan straight into the sink. Its temperature is often just below 100°C, yet many kitchens are simply not designed for that.
PVC drain pipes, which are standard in modern homes, are particularly vulnerable. This material can start to deform at around 60 to 70°C. Boiling water leaves virtually no safety margin.

Once you think about it consciously, the old reflex of pouring boiling pasta water into the drain no longer seems particularly clever. The combination of extreme heat, starch and fat works against the kitchen – while also denying dishes the opportunity for better texture.
Instead, pausing for a moment, reserving a little water for the sauce and allowing the rest to cool protects pipework, avoids expensive call-outs from drain-cleaning services and raises your pasta to a new level at the same time. One small action taken less from habit – and more from awareness.
