A tree with too little light may remain alive and continue producing leaves, yet certain growth changes can suggest that the available brightness is inadequate. Smaller leaves, weaker development and shifts in branch direction are signs that should be considered alongside the species’ characteristics and its surroundings.

Why can insufficient light change a tree’s growth?

Light is vital for photosynthesis, the process through which plants make the organic compounds needed for growth. Where available light is restricted, a tree may alter its growth pattern to make better use of the light it can access.

If a tree has very weak growth, leaf loss, dry branches or changes that continue even after light conditions have been corrected, other causes should be investigated. Therefore, a tree with too little light can be recognised through a combination of signs rather than one isolated change.
