How to Clean Shower Head Holes and Improve Water Pressure

A drop in shower pressure does not always mean the unit has failed. In many cases, the issue lies in the tiny holes in the shower head, which become blocked by limescale, sand and sediment that restrict the water flow.

Why does a shower lose pressure over time?

With daily use, minerals in the water build up in the small openings through which the spray is released. Once these points become clogged, the flow turns uneven, the shower feels weak and the pressure appears lower.

Before buying a replacement unit, it is worth cleaning the shower head safely, as the blockage is often at the water outlet. This is a straightforward task, but the circuit breaker must be switched off to prevent electric shocks and risks while handling it.

The most common signs include:

  • Spray jets: they come out crooked, weak or stop at certain holes.
  • Limescale: pale crusts form around the water outlet.
  • Brush: soft bristles remove dirt without widening the holes.
  • Circuit breaker: this must be switched off before any cleaning.
  • Technician: one is needed when the fault originates in the pipework.

What do the shower head holes have to do with water flow?

The shower head is the end point of the water supply, using small holes to spread the flow across a wider area evenly. When these channels become blocked, the water loses its distribution.

That is why low pressure may simply feel like water trying to pass through fewer outlets. Rather than forcing dirt further inside with sharp objects, it is better to dissolve the deposits while protecting the holes in the shower head.

How can you clean a shower head safely?

First, switch off the bathroom circuit breaker and make sure the shower is cold before touching any part. Remove the shower head, if your model allows this, and make a solution of white vinegar and warm water.

Soak before brushing

The dirt needs to soften first.

Vinegar helps loosen mineral deposits that have collected around the shower head nozzles.

After soaking, a soft brush removes the residue without misshaping the openings.

Leave the shower head submerged for a few hours, then brush the nozzles gently. Rinse it thoroughly, refit the part, switch the circuit breaker back on only at the end, and test the spray with care.

Clean it in this order:

  • switch off the circuit breaker before taking any part apart;
  • remove the shower head only if the model permits it;
  • soak it in white vinegar and warm water for a few hours;
  • brush it with soft bristles, without using needles;
  • rinse, refit and test the water flow.

Why should you not poke the holes with a needle?

Poking the holes with a needle may seem like a quick fix, but it can widen the outlet, distort the spray and push debris further into the part. This can worsen the distribution and reduce the shower's durability.

Knives, wire, hard toothpicks and corrosive products should also be avoided, as they can damage plastic, rubber or metal. Proper cleaning requires soaking time, a soft brush and patience, rather than force.

Avoid these maintenance mistakes:

  • piercing the nozzles with a needle or wire;
  • using harsh products without the manufacturer's guidance;
  • cleaning the shower while it is connected to the electricity supply;
  • forcing old or dried-out parts while dismantling them;
  • switching the circuit breaker back on before everything is properly fitted.

When does low pressure indicate a larger problem?

Anyone who has already tried tips for unblocking shower head holes and improving pressure should check whether the problem remains after cleaning. If every outlet in the home has low water flow, the issue may be in the pipework.

A low water tank level, a partly closed stop valve, ageing pipes or internal blockages require a technical assessment, especially if the drop is sudden. In these situations, replacing the shower may not solve the issue; the best option is to call a professional for a diagnosis.
